Brainstorming Our Film Intro

Before we have to create our own film intro later in the year to be graded by Cambridge our teacher told us to create a practice film intro. We could choose to get into groups of up to 3 or do it individually which is the route that I choose. Now to prepare for the filming of this intro we would have to brainstorm, what would it be about, where we would film it, who would be the actors, what equipment would be used to film it, etc.

The story would then be made into a storyboard. What is a storyboard you may ask well - A storyboard is a sequence of drawings, with directions and possible some dialogue representing the shots planned for a movie or television production.

The idea I developed for the film intro became a girl who kept on reliving the same exact weird day over and over again without knowing it but then discovering it at the end, which would leave the rest of the movie to discover why this is happening while the girl continues reliving the same day. I would focus this film to being a psychological thriller with a target audience of teens to young adults any gender. I chose that specific demographic as I believe the film could be understood to its fullest extent and enjoyed by this age as well as by any gender. I discovered that I would film all the home scenes in my own apt and then the outdoor scenes at a park near my apt. as well as an outdoor shopping center for different scenery. For the filming I choose to use my I-phone as well as these mics I would attach to the characters which I borrowed from my teacher.

What I learned while brainstorming this intro was that it takes much clear understanding of what you are going to film before you film it. This is definitely not a process you could skip and go into filming blindly without figuring out what you will need or do as then everything will be much harder than it has to be.

Discussion on Case Study

 EMMA SUAREZ

After finishing our case studies the whole class participated in a discussion post where we each spoke on our own case studies as well as answered the discussions of a few of our classmates.

A case study is an analysis on a specific subject to gain deeper knowledge on the subject and to understand it through a real-world perspective.  My case study was about the UFC and Paramount+ collab. This is important to media as it is the joining of two very different but powerful media dispensers, UFC which is the Ultimate Fighting Championships focusing on MMA (mixed martial arts) fights and broadcasting those live fights while on the other hand Paramount+ controlled by Paramount is a streaming service for your typical movie and tv show media. I researched again, Paramount+ and UFC but I also did a little research on Paramount Global and the other services is holds on to like MTV. Convergency would be the coming together of differing media, synergy would be different parts of a media company coming together to work to promote each other, horizontal integration would be when a company merges or owns another company of the same level while vertical integration would be when a media company owns multiple stages of production, distribution and exhibition of its content, cross-media would be the use of multiple different media platforms to promote the same content, and finally globalization would be a process by which media institutions expand their content across internationally. Yes, I definitely learned about media by doing the case study, I have learned how much a merge of media platforms can really mean and have effect on other things, as well as how much goes into actually doing the merge and keeping it up/profitable.

Case Study Pt. 2

-the significance of the spread of such technologies for institutions and audiences

This spread of such technologies is important as they can reduce distribution costs for example compared to pay per view which was done before with UFC. Global reach has also been extended past traditional cable. For audiences, choice is now more available then ever with more control on viewing. Improved quality also enhances the experience of watching this type of media

-the importance of technological convergence for institutions and audiences

Different media coming together also has a great importance on these two. UFC is now available across social media, streaming and other such places making it more accessible. Paramount+ becoming home to this whole new and different media expands in diversity and new clientele.

-the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences by international or global institutions

By being such a global media is can be difficult to target national and local audiences. Time zones are a huge issue when watching live fights Culture and language barriers, while subtitles can be used it does downgrade the experience. Global balancing must be developed along side local to keep viewers engaged.

-the ways in which the candidates’ own experiences of media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends in audience behavior

With the audience having many choices to be made by their own preferences it does end up showing patterns and trends. Watching streams and live tv rather than scheduled showings is popular in the audience. Also the freedom of being able to watch on different or multiple devices like phones, laptops, televisions. As well as the popularity of social media to gain media knowledge on this topic, through short videos and edits is a popular trend for audience.

Case Study

Now we have moved on to working and submitting our own case studies. A case study is an analysis on a specific subject to gain deeper knowledge on the subject and to understand it through a real-world perspective. Our teacher gave us the option to work in teams of two or individually and I chose to work individually. She also gave us the chance to choose what we wanted to make a case study about. For my case, I chose the recent collaboration of UFC and Paramount+.

The UFC is the Ultimate fighting championship which is a promotion company for the sport of mixed martial arts. What recently occurred in 2026 was a seven year media rights contract deal establishing Paramount+ (a streaming service) to be the official home for UFC where all its events will be streamed. After explaining what this case study should be about we had 6 active points to be included into our study.

- the issues raised by media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice
UFC is owned by TKO Group Holdings and Paramount+ owned by Paramount. The partnership increased corporate control and the funding will be completely controlled by subscription growth. This is different for UFC as its profits grew from commercials.

- the technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production,  distribution, marketing and at the point of consumption
For the production 4k and digital cameras to record the UFC fights have been developed for the best quality film for live fights. The distribution is taken care by streaming platforms and in this case that would be Paramount+. On demand streaming is also an option so the fights do not have to be watched live. For marketing, social media is a huge part, posting about upcoming fights deals and such gets the word across fast and world-wide. Cross-platform promotion is also occurring with the UFC brand promoting Paramount+ and Paramount+ promoting UFC. The point of consumption being devices like tv’s and phones.

Vocabulary For Case Study

 Vertical Integration-

is when you move up and down the production process acquiring suppliers or distributors within your same vertical, in this way you can own more of the production process.

Horizontal Integration-
means you are moving horizontally in the industry, merging with competitors with similar customer levels.

Convergence-
describes how technology has brought together previously separated media channels.

Synergy-

is the coming together of separate companies associated with different technologies.

Cross Media-

To tell the same story on different media platforms such as radio, television, social media. Mixes multiple media’s to tell the same stories at the same times. The cross media can be done with digital media and traditional media.

Globalization-

The growing interdependence of the world’s economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information.

Representing The World-

This is how the media depicts reality. It creates a way for audience to understand people, events, places, and ideas.

Audiences in the Digital Age-

These are people who use, and create media online. The people are active who like, comment, subscribe, and share. They have access to media anywhere using technology like phones, tablets etc.

Media Audience Effect in Media-

Media audience is the term to explain what media does to people and its impact. Media is a very impactful place that can change how a person sees themselves, others, and society. Media can affect the audience differently as there are many different people who see things differently.

Genre-Audience and Producers-

Genre tells the audience what to expect from the media. Audience rely on genre to choose the media they are going to watch. Producers also use genre to create content to fit the expectations of the audience.

Representation-

This refers to how the media shows and builds up the ideas about what it means to be male. Representing the feelings of being strong, confident and dominant creating stereotypes.

Shot List Audio

 Production Sound

In class today we took a deep dive into sound with the Shot List on YouTube. Here we found that sound in really half the picture.

There are two types of sound when it comes to production sound,

Single System - This is audio that comes directly from a camera when filming.

Dual System - This audio is recorded on a different system (this could be a recorder, a mic, etc.)

This type of sound is usually better and more professional as the sound is the only focus with high technology, and it lets the camera just focus on doing its thing which would be recording the scenes instead of gathering sound which it will not be as good at.

When the Dual System is used there is usually a Sound Mixer who has a sound cart that holds all the technology that can professionally obtain this sound.

On to different types of mics,

Shotgun Mics - These would be a directional microphone which focuses on a spot/location and gathers all the sound just from that place. Due to it being directional they are placed on a boom and held by a Boom Operator.

Condenser Mics - These would be a more sensitive microphone. They are typically used in studios.

Dynamic Mics - These microphones would be those that are good at capturing a closer sound, being able to handle high pressure levels without distortion. This would be them great to capture sound from drums, live vocals and other loud sounds.

Sound Department,

Sound Mixer - (Head of Department) They do pre-production where they have their voice heard early so they can project what they want the rest of the team to create based on their words. Sound mixers have the job of deciding what mics to use and where they should be placed when filming a scene meaning they have to collaborate with the rest of the team throughout different focuses. The filming team by finding out what the angles, shots, frames and camera movement they plan on doing so they know if using a boom mic can be used, etc. As well as the costume team for if the sound mixer would like to use a Lavalier Mic, mics that are hidden in the clothes of the actor.

Analyze Moving Images Part 2

 Part 2

For this assignment in class, we had to choose one short film, my partner and I decided to choose one from  Omeleto - YouTube .  After watching we had to break down what the director is doing with.

-Camera
-Audio
-Mise-En-Scene
-Editing

"Lost and Found" Omeleto

Mise-En Scene-

Being the setting, lighting and costumes, this is an extremely important part of the film to put it all together in an aesthetically pleasing way. For the setting the film is based in an Asian restaurant, details shown from Japanese writing on the boxes and walls, as well as the shoji (Japanese sliding doors). This really emphasizes the clear location of the film. Following the lighting is generally dark in this film with shadows around the corners of the screen as the conflict is happening at night. The only time the lighting changes is in the following day when the fox is trying to crochet the dinosaur back together, the scene before demonstrated the fox starting to piece the dino back together while it was night and as the next scene is light and the fox looks tired it can be analyzed that the fox has been trying to crochet the dino all night long. To provide contract from the mostly nighttime film the colors of the crochet characters are very bright and vivid, bright green and orange.

Editing-

Starting with font/colors, the title of the film "Lost and Found" is first written green and orange the same colors of the main characters. Most importantly it is written in a crochet yarn with a knot on the &. This demonstrates the connection between the two characters (the dino and the fox) how they are tied together emotionally. The credits follow the similar softness of the font, being in white with many loops and cursive. Due to the whole film being animated editing was required to make the entire film.

Analyzing Moving Images

For this assignment in class, we had to choose one short film, my partner and I decided to choose one from  Omeleto - YouTube .  After watching we had to break down what the director is doing with.

- Camera

-Audio

-Mise-En-Scene

-Editing

"Lost and Found" Omeleto

Camera-

The film starts with a close up shot of different moments between the two main characters then backs out turning into a wide shot demonstrating one of the characters getting out of bed. It shows the two characters interaction before we meet them. The film has a wide variety of close-up shots to show the main characters facial expressions, this is importance as it is an animated (stop-motion) film, so the crochet characters make it harder to see their facial reactions. The shallow depth of field is used to show how one characters looks at another while she is not looking this gives the audience a sense of how much the dinosaur characters loves and admires the women fox.

Audio-

The audio is important for this film as the characters do not speak so it relies on the soundtrack of music as well as non-diegetic sound from the movement of the characters. The music transitions based on what is happening in the film. As one character heroically tries to save another the action/encouraging music begins to play. As well as when the fox character starts to fall into the water sad music starts to play. The non-diegetic sound comes from postproduction examples being the sound of water, ripping of crochet body parts, footsteps, falling, and crocheting.

Presenting

 Presenting

For our vocabulary presentation I was in a group of 5 in which we were assigned vocabulary in terms of Editing. To make this presentation as creative as possible we decided to use Canva which is a graphic design platform that we were able to make a PowerPoint on. With bright colors, attractive text and even videos our presentation provided an inspirational outlook on the world of editing through the vocabulary words that make up that topic.

Moving on for this presentation we had to create an interactive element. The reason for this is so that the student could not only receive the information just by seeing and hearing it but instead by being tested on the information. This makes sure that the students are engaged and understand the information we were giving them. In my opinion this is a great way to learn to retain what I'm being taught. What my group created was a Blooket. Blooket is an educational website that creates games through questions. The students get prompted a question, if answered correctly they get points, points that they then would be able to steal from other players doing the same, in the end there is a final winner with the most points.

Vocab: Editing

Today in class we worked on our vocabulary interactive project. In the same groups as we had for our short film we were split up and assigned a different technical element which had vocabulary words that correlated with that element.

The elements assigned were,

- Sound

- Soundtrack

-Mise-En-Scene

-Editing

-Camera

-Movement

-Composition

My group was assigned Editing specifically, Cutting. First, we created a presentation on Canva and after for the interactive element we created a Blooket for the class based on our vocabulary words.

The words were,

-Shot/Reverse Shot-

A shot/reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, then the other character is shown looking back at the other character. Two-character interacting with each other are shown through a series of alternating shots, with each shot showing one character's perspective, and the next showing the others.

-Eyeline Match-

An editing technique that ensures a characters gaze in one shot aligns with what they appear to be looking at.

  • Creating a sense of spatial and visual continuity
  • Creating the sense that the audience is seeing the world through the eyes of the character
  • Directs the audience's attention to the relevant details, allowing them to follow conversations and actions without confusion.
-Graphic Match-
Graphic match cuts connect scenes through similar visual elements, creating symbolic links. The purpose of a graphic match in film is to create a strong visual connection between two different shots by matching graphic elements like shape, line, or color, thereby adding thematic meaning, reinforcing ideas, evoking emotion, and transforming the transition from a simple cut into a profound storytelling tool that invites viewer interpretation.

-Action Match-
A fundamental editing technique used to create a seamless sense of continuous motion and time. Is a continuous flow of movement across a cut between two different shots. The cut is made during a character's or object's movement, allowing the viewer's eye to follow the action rather than notice the edit.

-Jump Cut-
A jump cut is a cut in film editing meant to back a single continuous sequential shot of a subject into two parts, with a piece of footage removed to create the effect of jumping forward in time. An example of jump cut would be, watching someone walk across a room and, in a blink, they appear closer or further away with no visible motion in between, or seeing a character shave their beard and the next shot is them with a clean-shaven face, with no visible cutting action.

-Crosscutting-
Also known as parallel editing. This technique involves alternating between two or more separate scenes, often occurring simultaneously in different locations. With a purpose of creating relationships between these scenes. Creates suspense, parallels (that the characters or working towards the same goal) as well as enhanced emotional impact.

-Parallel Editing-
Parallel editing is a filming technique where are two separate scenes in different locations and there are rapidly switching back and forth to make it seem like the other scene with the original scene is happening at the same time.

-Cutaway-
A cutaway is a brief shot in film or video that interrupts the main action or scene to show something else, such as a related subject, a different location, or a character's reaction.

-Insert-
Is a shot, often a close-up, that focuses on a specific detail or object within a larger scene, like a hand picking up a key or a sign with important text. Inserts are used to draw the audience's attention to something crucial for the story or to add visual details and emphasis.

It is crazy to think how all of these words add up to create the world of editing and how this goes into the whole process of creating films. Editors must understand and use each of these vocabulary words whenever they begin editing.

Feedback On My Short Film

The first film in Aice Media was a great experience I was able to learn how important camera angles are for storytelling, and especially that audio is key!  The biggest problem we had in my groups film was the loss of audio. When filming in public locations it is important to understand that if the background sound outside does not seem so loud when filming, when you watch it will be the main audio in the clip.

Finding the perfect location that fits the exact image I had in my brain was a very fulfilling experience while filming. Seeing how I could manipulate the camera to create the perfect scene that matches again what I have in mind. While the filming angles and connections of the scenes were well developed but without audio, they seem a bit lack luster. When it was time for the editing that was definitely the hardest part. A combination of the Adobe Premiere Pro tutorials as well as Google searches aided my group in the creation of our film.

There were much troubleshooting issues that went on with the editing of our project, from how to upload our clips, how to create the credits section and the most important the audio issue.

Brainstorming Our Film Intro

Before we have to create our own film intro later in the year to be graded by Cambridge our teacher told us to create a practice film intro...
